1. How long have you been a member of Nela Athletics?
I’ve been a member at NELA Athletics for almost a year now. I was a member a few years back, but got injured and had to stop – doctors orders.
2. What is your favorite fitness achievement?
Seeing myself get stronger and becoming more fluent with different movements, some of which were new to me, is how I describe my own success. Specifically, getting better with skills or lifts overhead (anything shoulder related), are especially fulfilling because those were movements I couldn’t do before because of my shoulder injury.
3. What are three benefits that you have experienced through working out?
Obviously, getting back/staying in shape is number one. I’ve always enjoyed working out, but made it less of a priority over the years. Now it’s part of my routine and I’m slowly getting back to where I want to be physically. Secondly, it’s a great stress reducer. Especially after a difficult and trying 2020, being able to de-stress by disconnecting (even if it’s only for an hour) from all the craziness around us, has really helped me get through the rough patches. Lastly, I can’t discount all of the new friendships I/we have made while working out at NELA Athletics; it’s another support system during these difficult times.
4. Have you had any physical changes that you noticed?
YES! Clothes have started to fit looser/fit better. I’ve started to see a little bit more muscle definition and, obviously, I am stronger. While the scale may not be going down as much as I want, I know there are many factors that play into my weight, and I’m okay with that. Gotta continue to trust the process…. Also, I’ve had a pretty consistent amount of bruises the past 6 months lol.
5. What motivates you in the gym and outside of the gym?
Nowadays, I think my motivation stems from too many times not finishing things all the way through. It’s easy to start things, but finishing them is the real challenge. So in respect to the gym, being disciplined in not cheating myself. Do every rep, add more weight, JUST SHOW UP! Outside the gym, the same discipline applies. Handle business at work, keep your promises, try to be a little better every day.
6. What is your favorite part of the Nela Athletics experience?
The community feel here at NELA is awesome. We’ve met some pretty awesome people and hope to meet more once we get a little more normalcy back.
7. What are some hobbies or activities that you enjoy besides working out?
We really like the outdoors, so whenever we get a chance, my wife and I will go on a nice hike somewhere in SoCal. We’ve also taken on camping (not glam-ping). Our last trip was out to Big Sur. It was gorgeous, and it’s also nice to not have reception, so you really get to disconnect. I also like doing Spartan Races. I have a couple lined up for later this year (permitting COVID cases continue to drop).
8. What is the most interesting thing about you or the coolest thing you’ve ever done?
I’m a coffee snob and I used to compete in full on barista competitions. Don’t get me wrong though, I’ll still drink that gas station cup of joe.
9. What is your motto/ words that you live by or try to remind yourself of everyday?
“Nothing changes if nothing changes.”
10. What is something that you’ve always wanted to do or somewhere you’ve always wanted to go?
We have a long list of places we want to go to, but a place I’ve always wanted to visit – thanks to my 4th grade teacher – are the Galapagos Islands.
