Hi, I’m Pheby! You can call me Peb. I’m so happy to join the Coaching team at Nela. I was born in the Philippines, moved to Los Angeles when I was six, and have lived here since then. I studied Dance at LMU, so you will likely see me taking dance breaks while working out. What brought me to CrossFit? I fell into a deep depression and found myself less active and gaining weight as the years went by. I was 35 and the unhealthiest I’ve ever been. One day and forty pounds later, I had difficulty breathing just sitting on the couch. I started taking Bikram yoga and overheard one of the instructors talking about something called ‘CrossFit.’ I looked it up on Yelp, signed up for my first intro in April of 2012, and the rest is history. A year later, I took my CrossFit L1 and continued my fitness education as the years went by to add tools to my toolbox. I do not consider myself a gifted athlete, a fitness guru, or an expert of any kind. I’m just an ordinary person who was able to accomplish things I always thought were out of reach due to the fantastic support I received from my CrossFit community.
At 37, I ran my first-ever marathon in under four hours. At 39, I completed an Ironman Triathlon without knowing how to swim or ride a bike two years prior. At 41, I trained for my first Powerlifting meet shortly after becoming a Certified Coach. Over the years, I have taught and programmed many Crossfitters to complete their first race (from 5k’s to Marathons). Five years ago, due to personal challenges and difficulties, I chose to stop Coaching. In 2022, I found that NELA had an Open Gym membership and signed up. Paul and Lily were kind and welcoming and asked if I was interested in Coaching at NELA, and I politely declined. They recently approached me again and thought it was time to dust off my toolbox. I am so excited to be on the floor again.
I’m a big believer in the Ironman motto that “Anything Is Possible.” We all have it in us to overcome obstacles and persevere. My Coaching Style: If you ask me if you’re doing something incorrectly or how to do something, 90% of the time my answer will be “It all depends,” and then you’re stuck with me for over 20 mins breaking down movements. LOL If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to help. Looking forward to seeing you in class!
